Studio Newborn

 Prep Guide

What you need to know before your little babe’s photo shoot.

Congratulations on the newest addition to your family! These early days are such a magical time, and I’m honored to capture these precious moments for you. To help your session run smoothly and make it an enjoyable experience, here are some tips and tricks to prepare for the big day.

When to Schedule the Session

  1. As Soon as Baby Arrives
Once your little one is here, please get in touch via email, call, or text. Sessions are ideally scheduled when your baby is 4–20 days old, as newborns are sleepiest during this period.

  2. Weekday Mornings
Sessions typically take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on weekdays, as newborns are most content and sleepy earlier in the day. Weekend availability is rare, so reach out early if a weekend is essential.

  3. Special Requests
If you’ve seen a setup, prop, or style you love on my website or social media, let me know in advance! I’ll have it ready to incorporate into your session.

On the Day of the Session

  1. Keep Baby Awake Beforehand
Stimulate and keep baby awake for about an hour before the session. A warm bath or interactive play while in a diaper can help tire them out and prepare them for a deeper sleep.

  2. Feed Baby Right Before
A full tummy equals a happy, sleepy baby. Consider arriving a little early to feed them at the studio, especially if you have a long drive. Feeding frequently in the 12 hours leading up to the session can also help baby stay content.

  3. Family and Sibling Photos First
If older siblings are joining, we’ll capture family and sibling shots at the beginning of the session. It’s best if siblings can leave afterward to ensure a quiet, relaxed environment. Arranging for Dad or another family member to take siblings home or out for a treat works great.

  4. Bring a Pacifier (if possible)
Even if baby doesn’t usually use one, a pacifier can be helpful for soothing and settling them into poses.

  5. Dress for Warmth
The studio will be warm to keep your baby cozy. Feel free to bring a change of clothes for yourself and stay hydrated.

  6. Baby’s Wardrobe is Covered
I provide all wraps, headbands, hats, and props, so there’s no need to bring outfits unless you have something special you’d like to include, or if the babe is outside of the 15 day window. Let me know in advance so I can plan a set around it.

  7. Breaks are Welcome
Don’t worry if your baby needs to eat, have a diaper change, or take a moment to settle. We’ll take all the time we need to ensure baby (and you!) are comfortable.

What to Wear for Family and Sibling Shots

  1. Keep it Simple
Neutral tones like cream, gray, and soft pastels photograph beautifully. These timeless colors keep the focus on your baby and the connections between family members.

  2. Avoid Bright Colors and Logos
Neon or vibrant colors can cast unflattering tones on the skin, and logos or text can distract from the moment.

  3. Classic Outfits for Siblings
Choose simple, timeless clothing for older siblings. Dresses, button-down shirts, or plain tops work wonderfully.

  4. Need Inspiration?
I’m happy to help! If you’re unsure about wardrobe choices, feel free to email me for advice or ideas.

  5. Client Closet, keep in mind I do have a client closet that includes gowns dresses and material to wrap you in!

Final Thoughts

Sit back and enjoy! These sessions are a time to relax and soak in your baby’s sweetness. Watching your little one’s first photo session is such a special experience, and I’m here to make it stress-free and fun for your family.

I can’t wait to meet your new addition and create beautiful memories for you to cherish forever!
